Attending Classes

  • Arrive 10 – 15 minutes early to allow time to sign-in and prepare for your class. Out of respect for others, if you are arriving more than 15 minutes late please try to attend another class.  If you are arriving late, please unroll your mat prior to entering the studio, unzip coats etc. so noise is limited.  If you are aware that relaxation is taking place please wait until relaxation is finished.
  • Please be very mindful of noise. Be mindful of those already in the studio who may be resting/relaxing.
  • Yoga is practiced in bare feet.  Please remove outdoor shoes when you enter the studio. This helps us keep the space clean and barefoot-friendly for everyone.
  • For hygienic reasons it is strongly suggested that students bring their own mat. If you forget your mat, you can borrow one from the studio.  If borrowing a mat please spray and wipe it down after use.  The Yoga House also sells mats.
  • If using studio props such as blankets, blocks, and straps please return them to the shelves in the way that you found them. Blankets should be folded properly so they are ready for the next person to use.
  • Please respect those of us with sensitivities to scent by not wearing perfume, cologne or scented hair and body products to class.
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight, flexible clothing such as shorts, T-shirts, leggings or
    work-out wear.
  • If you have long hair, you will want to pull it off your face with an elastic or clip. We have extras at the studio if you forget yours.
  • Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. We suggest you not eat for about two hours before practicing.
  • We are a cell phone free zone.  Please turn off your ringer and buzzer before class starts.
  • If you have to leave class early, let your teacher know before class begins and place your mat close to the door so that when you leave quietly, you do not disrupt others. Do not leave during Savasana as this can be disruptive. Leave your props where they are rather than walking to return props while the class is resting. The teacher will happily pick up your props and put them away after you have left and the class is finished.
  • Please wait until everyone is finished final relaxation and the teacher has completely finished the class prior to leaving.

Practicing Yoga

Yoga is most beneficial when practiced regularly. We encourage students to develop their own personal practice even if it means only 10 minutes a day.   You may be surprised as this develops into a longer practice.  Working with a qualified teacher in a yoga class is meant to inspire the discipline of personal practice. It also provides you with important personal feedback about posture, alignment, technique, function and sequencing which you can apply to your personal practice.

Yoga is Non-competitive

Be compassionate with yourself. Stay connected to your inner teacher. Stop whenever you need to take a break. Listen to the messages your body is sending you as you practice. Learn to recognize the difference between sensation and pain. You should never feel pain while practicing yoga. Most importantly remember that yoga is non-competitive - either with others and yourself - and it is open to everybody. Some classes may challenge you physically and emotionally, so remember that it truly is your practice and listen to what your body is telling you and never do anything that causes pain. You should never get injured from doing yoga mindfully and with respect to your own limits. Have fun, be willing to laugh at yourself and breathe.
