OPP Marine Unit Welcomes the Start of Summer
(MIDLAND, On)- Marine officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) aboard the OPP patrol vessel Thomas P. Coffin welcomed the official start of summer this week by rewarding some young mariners who "Got Caught Wearing Their Lifejackets" while checking vessels and operators for equipment and signs of impairment on area waterways during the June 17-20, 2024 time frame.
Several vessels with young mariners as passengers onboard were checked by officers during their patrols and the mariners were rewarded for wearing their lifejackets by being provided with "I Got Caught Wearing My Lifejacket" Tee shirts, see the attached OPP submitted photographs.
Officers were on waterways patrol for over 30 hours, checking 24 vessels and their occupants with 10 operators being educated for minor violations of the Canada Shipping Act with three other operators being charged for violations under the same act. Two operators were charged with lifejacket offences, one operator was charged with a liquor related offence and three operators had to submit to a Roadside Screening Device, all with a pass result. Officers responded to 1 call for service and there were no reported vessel collisions during this time.
The "I Got Caught Wearing My Lifejacket" water safety program has been in place on OPP patrolled waterways for many years and enjoys great success in educating young mariners the value in having and wearing your lifejacket while on the water.
