WETT Inspection today in Tiny Township. Five WETT Inspections this week. WETT Inspections are first and foremost a code inspection to ensure the system (including chimney) is code compliant. This generally requires going on the roof and into the attic to do properly - if you had a WETT Inspection and this did not happen; think again. But WETT Inspections should also inspect the inside of the fireplace - the lintel, damper, smoke chamber -- and the inside of the woodstove - the firebricks - the gaskets - any other parts. It is not as extensive as a Chimney Sweep which should also include an inspection but should provide a good overall condition of the system. If your WETT Inspector is not doing that then maybe look for another inspector! It is not only for your insurance company but for your own peace of mind as well!

Does burning potato peelings clean a chimney? Well this one goes back many years - along with the hot burn and other chimney myths. The hot burn was recommended with the airtight stoves - and did serve a purpose - if you had one each morning for first fire. But did not clean chimney nor eliminate need to sweep chimney nor was it ever intended to. The potato skins have also been proven to be nothing more than what the hot burn does - it may help to reduce the hard creosote known as State 3 creosote to a more crumbly and flaky creosote - but creosote remains. Chimney still needs to be inspected and cleaned. In fact Ontario Fire Code and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) state the chimney should be inspected annually (for deposits, soundness and operation) - and cleaned if necessary. Cleaning should be done as per the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) at 1/8" or the Ontario Fire Code as 2mm. Do not neglect your chimney and wood burning system - gain Peace of Mind. Call your local Certified Chimney Sweep and have your system inspected and/or cleaned.
