In
September 2007, Bill 171 was passed. It allowed Registered Dental
Hygienists to “self-initiate,” allowing Ontario residents to have the
choice of receiving professional oral healthcare by a Registered Dental
Hygienist without having to see a dentist at the same time.
You are still loyal to your dentist when supporting an independent dental hygienist.
Dentists
and hygienists provide different services. You see a dentist for dental
work, such as fillings, crowns, root canals, etc. You see a hygienist
for hygiene services like cleanings and periodontal treatments. You do
not have to see them at the same time or under the same roof. This is
important and we encourage you to see your dentist on an on-going basis.
