How often should I have my chimney swept? This is actually a much more difficult question than it might appear. The easy answer is that the Ontario Code and the NFPA-211 both state that a chimney or other wood burning system should be inspected at least once a year for condition, clearances and amount of creosote deposits. Repairs required should be completed and the chimney cleaned if more than 2mm of deposits exist. This also ensure that your chimney is clear of critters (animals or birds) who may have made a home inside, which very well may make your chimney unsafe to use. The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that open masonry fireplaces should be swept at 1/8" of sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system. The Ontario Fire Code states cleaning at 2mm of deposits. The depth of 1/8" or 2mm is considered to be enough fuel buildup to cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or spreading to the home. Factory built fireplaces should be cleaned whenever there are any amount of deposits, due to the corrosive nature of the buildup and damage it can cause. So the answer really is it depends.. it is best to call a WETT Certified Chimney Sweep and be sure! Have your system inspected and cleaned.. sleep well at night and have Peace of Mind!
