Hammer Toes
Description
A hammer toe is a toe that is bent at the middle joint, giving it a curled appearance.
A hammer toe:
- May cause pain when walking or moving the foot.
- Has a curled appearance.
- May be difficult to move.
- May result in corns on the top of the toe.
- May result in callus under the ball of the foot.
Anyone can get a hammer toe. There are however, a few factors that make you more likely to develop them. Such as:
- Genetics (if your parents had them, you may get them too)
- Injury in which the toe is jammed or broken
- Arthritis and other diseases that affect the nerves and muscles
- Bunions
- The way you walk
- Poorly fitting shoes
