Hammer Toes

Description

A hammer toe is a toe that is bent at the middle joint, giving it a curled appearance.

A hammer toe:

  • May cause pain when walking or moving the foot.
  • Has a curled appearance.
  • May be difficult to move.
  • May result in corns on the top of the toe.
  • May result in callus under the ball of the foot.

Anyone can get a hammer toe. There are however, a few factors that make you more likely to develop them. Such as:

  • Genetics (if your parents had them, you may get them too)
  • Injury in which the toe is jammed or broken
  • Arthritis and other diseases that affect the nerves and muscles
  • Bunions
  • The way you walk
  • Poorly fitting shoes
